What medium does sound travel fastest through?
Definitely solid. You can do this experiment on your own. Next time, you are in the train station, drop to your knees and place your ear to the ground. You’ll hear the sound of the train approaching on the ground before it reaches you through air. Of course, it will be a different story if the ground is porous. The propagation of sound depends on both the stiffness of the material and the density of the material. The stiffer the material, the faster will the sound move and the denser the material, the slower it propagates. Solid, though denser than gases and liquids, are much stiffer than liquid and gases. Hence, for most cases, sound travels much faster in solid. Speed of sound = sqrt (stiffness / density) ignore this if you do not understand.
