You can use straw or hay bales. Or make one out of cardboard boxes (large appliance ones) filled with more cardboard and packing material, making sure you will be shooting into the ends of the cardboards. You use as ratchet to tighten the sheets together. You can also make it out of jute backed carpeting. Use scraps and throwaways. Cut them all 12″x48″x3/4″ rectangles using a plywood cutting template. Make two compressors using 4 pieces of 12″x48″ plywood & 2×4’s. Join the compressors with 60″ lengths of threaded 1/2″ rod, nuts & fender washers. Stack the rugs in between the compressors and tighten the whole mess up. A 48″ stack will compress to about 34″ x 48″ which means you’ll need more to make a proper 48″ x 48″ butt. GO for 58″ if possible.
