What manufacturing processes do they use in building aircraft?
Very generically: Skins are made of sheetmetal aluminum. Stringers and longerons are the structural members running fwd and aft. They are usually extruded aluminum (more modern technique) or bent sheetmetal. Frames provide the main fuselage support and provide the shape of the fuselage. They are usually also aluminum with some exceptions where titanium or Stainless steel is required (engine mount areas and other high temp or high strength areas). All these structural components are assembled together using rivets ans hi-loks. In some cases the stringers are bonded to the skins using very strong bonding agents. Most of the aluminum used is 2000 and 7000 series, heat treated to T4 or T6 condition. Brackets for systems are also bent sheetmetal or extrusions, usually 2000 series aluminum. Composites (mainly carbon composites) are used for wing to body fairings, pylon covers, secondary doors, some bulkheads etc. For weldments, usually subcomponents, 6061 series aluminum is used.
