What makes up a food chain/web?
There are 3 major categories found within a food chain/web. These are producers, consumers, and decomposers. Producers are green plants that are photosynthetic and are responsible for producing food for other members in the wetlands. Producers use energy from the sun to produce food. Plants are also called autotrophs because they produce their own food. All other members in the wetlands are called heterotrophs because they depend on others for food. These include the consumers and decomposers. Primary consumers eat only plants and are called herbivores. Secondary consumers feed on plant eating animals. Tertiary consumers eat plant eating animals. Decomposers are usually bacteria and break down dead plant and animal matter. They recycle nutrients and return them to the soil as they decompose matter.
