What makes the new york harbor unique?
I assume this is for a class assignment. New York has one of the best deep-water harbors in the world. It is largely safe from storms, providing multiple places where ocean-going ships can dock, including along the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, and New Jersey shorelines. I’m not sure that it is unique, though, since there are some other harbors in the world that are of equivalent quality. Here’s a link to the wikipedia article about the harbor: http://en.wikipedia.
From a commercial point of view NY Harbor (thanks to the Hudson River and the Erie Canal) allows direct access to the interior of the North American continent, a possibility only rivaled by New Orleans. From a population base, NYC has 8 million people, and surrounding areas in New Jersey (4 million), Long Island (3 million), and Westchester bring this to nearly 16 million people all within a close distance of the harbor. Few other harbors anywhere come close to this. NYC hosts the world capital (United Nations) and the center of American capitalism, Wall Street.
