The safe operation of trains is the most important responsibility of a conductor. Conductors must know all of the operating rules used by the Rail Industry and how to apply them. Mistakes by conductors may lead to loss of life or property. The hours are often long, monotonous, and tiresome. It is very common for a conductor to spend many nights away from home. Conductors may be frequently scheduled to work during the night, weekends, and in all weather conditions.
