The strain of H1N1 that existed in 1976 is not the same strain that is currently circulating in the population. The vaccine that was created in the 1970’s was made in a different way than the current H1N1 vaccine. The 1976 vaccine was whole killed virion. This type of influenza vaccine is no longer produced. It is now purified hemagglutinin so that it is “cleaner”. The production process is otherwise similar.
