What Makes Highway Construction Sites Dangerous?
Similar to building sites, workers on highway sites must deal with the heavy equipment and vehicles necessary to complete the project. This often puts them at great risk of possible injury. Mistakes or inattention while operating bulldozers, dump trucks, front loaders or other heavy equipment can have dire consequences. Likewise, motor vehicle operators and/or their passengers can be exposed to great risks by hazardous conditions existing in road construction zones. The most common risks are drivers speeding in constructions zones, disobeying temporary construction traffic signs or signals, driving inattentively, failing to merge or merging at unreasonable speeds and drivers using cellphones and text messaging. Besides the assemblage of heavy equipment, construction workers must also deal with external hazards, including darkness, treacherous surfaces, inaccurate signage and inattentive drivers. Most jobs become more dangerous after night falls, and construction work is no different. R
