What Makes Gluttony Deadly?
What is so bad about gluttony, anyway? Its not one of the bad sins, like adultery or stealing. All gluttony does is make you soft and huggable. Its the cute sin. The problem with gluttony is that it seeks to feed the soul with the bodys food. It can cause a person to become so full in his stomach he loses his appetite for God. It can cause a person to become so enamored with pleasure that he loses his thoughts for God. One of the crueler tricks of gluttony is that it exacts painful dues while failing to deliver the promised pleasure. In its clear and seductive way it imposes the very opposite of what was promised. Gluttony is about gaining power. For a moment the stomach may indeed feel a gratifying dominance. We cannot make other people do right. Friends, neighbors, spouse, children all may resist our will, but that French silk pie is going to know who is boss. Ironically overeating may be an assertion of power, but the classic confession of a glutton is, I have no willpower. Gluttony
