I think ‘contemporary’ is a way of distinguishing us from ‘classical’ groups, of which there are quite a few. In Australia, we have a number of a cappella groups who sing classical music, a style particularly popular with choirs. There are also a number of Australian groups who perform primarily folk or world music, so I think the description mostly describes the styles of music that are chosen. Our group performs a wide variety of styles, but our arrangements could all be considered ‘contemporary’ and in a certain way they are all underpinned by the style of jazz, which is our main love.
