What makes America “great”?
What makes America what it is (although not perse ‘great’) is that it is very influential. Either economic, military, or political, America has a very big impact on what is happening around the world. Especially now that the US is the only current superpower (until China starts flexing its muscles, that is), the US have the power to influence a large portion of the world. Lately, the US has lost a lot of its greatness, by putting the world at war (Iraq, Afghanistan, etc), and neglecting its stature as global leader. I am reluctant to really judge the US, as I am not a US citizen, I am from the EU. By that, I have a bit more distant look at your country, although I have visited it two years ago (and liked it a lot). I guess the reason why American people are so proud of their country being great, is because everybody keeps repeating that it is great. It is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
