What makes a living on a Living Learning Community different than any other floor community on-campus?

Columbia’s Residence Life Office has always believed that our residential students can benefit from living within an incredibly diverse community—ethnically diverse, socio-economically diverse, geographically diverse… and diverse in artistic and academic interest. As a result, most of our residents live in communities with students of different majors and different backgrounds and different world views. Certainly this is still true of the communities we’re building in the LLCs, but we also know that communities grounded in such diversity can be pushed further educationally by focusing their attention and social activities around specific thematic explorations of the arts. All the same diversity found in the rest of Residence Life, with programming opportunities tailored specifically for the community based on the common interest of the residents of the floor.
