What Makes a Good Owl Nesting Box?
Even though they are known for living in barns, barn owls have many different places that they can nest. Since there were not always owl boxes for them to use barn owls, like other raptors, used hollow trees and sometimes dug small holes in banks before they ever used barns as a nesting place. These birds of prey usually take up lodging in a purpose made owl boxes. Owls like to have the ability to hide when they are roosting. If they are able to hide they will rarely flee from human activity. They also like to roost where they can stay dry. Most if not all of the owl boxes address these two issues. Owl boxes provide an excellent hiding place while at the same time protecting the barn owls from the elements. Since many raptors don’t make nests to lay their eggs in they need a level surface with some kind of protection from the eggs rolling off a high place.
