What makes a catalytic converter fail?
Catalytic converters, might fail for a number of reasons. Age is one issue, but failure before 200,000 miles often has other factors: • An impact to the converter can damage it internally • A leaking intake manifold can allow coolant to enter the intake and the converter • An engine misfire, allows excessive fuel to enter the converter • A malfunctioning oxygen sensor can cause excessive fuel in the converter • Oil entering the intake stream from a failed gasket • Excessive use of some fuel additives could damage the converter Of course this list is not all inclusive, but these are all relatively common factors.
