What major muscles are used when throwing a ball?
The common misconception is that the deltoid muscles generate a majority of the force. However, a good throwing technique requires the athlete to use their body weight and the large muscle groups of the legs, back and trunk to generate kinetic energy. This energy generates across the shoulder in the direction of the thrown object. After the object is thrown, the retained energy in the throwing arm needs to dissipate back to the large core muscles, which then absorb it. Poor mechanics during the wind-up and cocking phases require the shoulder muscles to generate extra energy to propel the object being thrown. This leads to fatigue of the shoulder muscles, and could ultimately result in long-term injuries. In baseball training, little things add up to make a huge difference.
