What should a national broadband plan look like? The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants to know. The agency opened up a 60-day comment period Wednesday, asking anyone with a vested interest in broadband to provide their input on how best to go forward. Specifically, the FCC wants to know the “most effective and efficient ways” to ensure national broadband, strategies for providing the most affordable high-speed Internet services, evaluations of current broadband deployments – including stimulus-related broadband grant programs, and how to use broadband to create better communities. “In spite of the fact that it springs in part from an economic downturn that has put a lot of our fellow citizens on the ropes, it signals that at long last we are getting serious about making our citizens and our country more competitive, prosperous, and fulfilled,” acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps said during today’s open commission meeting.
