What made Astronomy and Astrology separate from being one discipline?
I think a lot of misinformation is being spread that Indian Astronomy is but Astrology. This is wrong. Anyone in doubt must peruse himself of Aryabhata’s book (Aryabhateeyam; I have a copy). It is purely Astronomy; but don’t expect telescopes, nebuale or galaxies in that. It is about the motion of Sun, Moon and the five bodies we call planets. The Mathematics (Circa 450 AD; about 1550 years ago) dealing with their positions and movements along the narrow strip or girdle called Zodiac and the stars in that strip (divided into 27 ‘Nakshatras’ or Asterisms). How to predict their movements is the problem that was tackled. Because of the importance of the nodes of lunar orbit in predicting eclipses these two were treated like the other seven for the purpose of calculations. He arrived at these figures after a million or so observations by his predecessors (named and unnamed) spanning perhaps several centuries before him, the recorded evidence of which can’t be expected in a ‘hard copy’ but
