What lower resolution would look best on a 20″ Dell 1680×1050 native monitor?

Wasn’t sure exactly which forum to post this in, but it’s gaming related, so I decided to put it here: I have a 1680×1050 native resolution widescreen 20″ Dell monitor. My computer is getting a bit long in the tooth, so I want to lower the resolution on some games to get a better framerate. I know that all resolutions other than native suffer, but some seem to suffer more than others. What would be the most optimal resolution to drop my monitor down to given it’s native resolution?
