What long range fight escort aircraft helped win the air war in Europe during ww2?
The Mustang was fitted with “drop tanks” slung below the belly of the plane, holding 250 gallons of fuel. This was enough to get them to the target area in Germany, leaving the fuel supply inside the plane’s tanks to fight on and return home. The tanks could be dropped when the enemy’s airplanes appeared, because with the tanks still attached the Mustang was not very maneuverable.
