What lessons were learned about the Tora Bora experience?
I don’t think anyone really knows where Osama bin Laden is now or where he was then. Remember, there was an awful lot going on, and I think the real choice was to do something the way we did it or not to do it at all. Clearly it really wasn’t a surprise. But clearly we have more control over an operation when we have our American or coalition forces — not just Americans — embedded with local troops. What lessons have you learned from the campaign in Afghanistan, and what might change in the future, the extension of this campaign as it goes on? Let me answer that in a very general way. I think what has really been important is two things. Overall, there’s been very decisive leadership from the president; issues get debated, issues get decided, and when they’re decided, we move on.
