What lessons should be learned from the challenges of urban regeneration?
The complex interests of any large-scale regeneration project can mean that what is initially conceived doesn’t always reflect the end result. Major plans to resurrect the declining industrial area of ‘Eastside’, in Birmingham, were drafted in 1999. By 2008, significant progress had been made at several key areas, however other ambitions had been hit by major delays, with some canceled altogether. With many years left to run, the progression to date has exposed the finely-balanced challenges faced. This is helping the decision process to ensure the ongoing success of the development.
