He was instrumental in once again merging religion and politics in the US, and the odd, yet pervasive belief that Christians are Republicans, and that the Republican Party reflects the teachings of Jesus Christ. Behind him he left a legacy that includes a university, which will probably turn out more people just like him. They pretty universally characterize him as neither racist nor sexist but caring and compassionate.
