What learning content qualifies as continuing education CE for nurses?
A. The ANCC Commission on Accreditation (COA) has not identifitied specific topics that are or are not considered nursing CE. Continuing nursing education builds upon the registered professional nurses’ education and experience. Contact hours, then, should not be awarded for basic or generic nursing education content. The ANA Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development further distinguish continuing nursing education from in-service and orientation, which also are not eligible for contact hours. Depending on the educational design and program goal(s), target audience, objectives, and content, an activity may or may not be considered nursing CE. Accredited approvers make this determination in the peer review process; accredited providers are accountable to see that their activities meet the overall philosophy of continuing nursing education as presented in the ANA standards.
