What laws govern having air in a commercial truck?

By law, there must be a heater and windshield defroster in the truck, but there is no law stating that they must provide air conditioning. Heater and windshield defroster are part of the safety equipment of a vehicle. Air conditioning is not. But, that said, almost all trucks have air conditioning as companies know that comfort is required for proper sleep which helps a driver to be a safe driver. Speaking from experience though, I once had my air conditioning break down on one of my runs to Texas, and the company would not pay for it to be fixed while I was on the road. It had to wait until I was back at the yard. Thankfully as team drivers, my husband and I were back in the yard in 3 days. Not a restful trip.
