What languages do Burundians speak?
Although Burundi is often described as a Francophone country, the majority of the population who live in the rural areas speak only Kirundi. Most of them are also illiterate. French is mostly spoken by a handful in the capital city, Bujumbura, who are lucky enough to have a University degree. Many Burundians living near Tanzania and Congo also speak Swahili.
