What language is spoken in switzerland?

Well Switzerland has four national languages (which I must admit baffles me a bit lol). As others have said it includes: 1. German (with roughly 60% of the country speaking this). 2. French (with about 20% speaking it as their first language) 3. Italian (this is spoken in the more southernly regions and about 6% of the population speak it) 4. Romanish (this is much rarer and is only spoken by about 1% of the Swiss population, usually in small areas of Eastern Switzerland) So I’d say that generally, if you can communicate in German you’d be absolutely fine and understood by all (and most of the Swiss population will also know English as a second language anways).

Depends which part of Switzerland you live. In the northern part Swiss-German is spoken (different from German German). This Swiss-German is also spoken all over but in the Geneva area you will find that French is spoken and in the south you will find that Italian is spoken. The telephone kiosks give instructions in four languages: Swiss-German, French, Italian and also in English.

Swiss German, slightly different from German (according to Germans) Many Swiss speak more than one language due to their location near France etc…

I believe that there are four official languages – French, Italian, German and Romansch. However many more languages are spoken also.
