The most populous West European nations are Germany, Italy, Spain, France and the United Kingdom, so the languages spoken most are German, Italian, Spanish, French and English. Germany has the highest population at around 82.5 million, so German is probably the most spoken native language. However, English is by far the most popular choice as a second language worldwide and a large percentage of the European population can speak it to at least some degree. Since the population of the United Kingdom stands at around 61.6 million (the vast majority of whom speak English, though it is just one of several offical UK languages), English is probably the most spoken overall even when those inhabitants of Austria and Switzerland who speak German are added to the German total and those from Belgium and Switzerland who speak French are added to the French total.
