What language is easier to learn: Norwegian, Swedish or Danish ?
I’ve learned Swedish and Norwegian as an immigrant to both countries, and can read Danish. Danish is the hardest of the 3 to learn due to pronunciation. It’s easy to read, but spoken communication is very difficult, especially if you aren’t immersed in the language. Norwegian is the simplest for an English speaker, grammatically. It’s easy to learn to read and write Norwegian (bokmål is the form most foreigners learn) and to make yourself understood while speaking. As others have said though, spoken Norwegian has no standard form. If you learn to speak bokmål, you will always sound like a foreigner speaking Norwegian. You will be understood, but you’ll also sound stiff and unnatural. In order to really speak Norwegian, you’d need to choose a dialect and learn that form. The pronunciation, vocabulary, word choice, etc can vary a LOT between dialects. If you aren’t living in Norway, the resources for this are limited.
