What language do they speak in Latvia?
. Latvian is a Baltic language, based on the Latin alphabet, and not at all related to Russian. The Russian language is, however, spoken by more than a third of the population. (This is directly related to the Russian ethnic population that lives in Latvia as mentioned previously.) You will find that a knowledge of Russian is very useful in Latvia, especially in the major cities such as Riga. In some instances, it may actually be more useful than Latvian! For this reason, we recommend learning Russian as you will be able to use it in many other countries including Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
