What language do the Comanche Indians speak?
The Comanche Indians call themselves Numinu, which is translated as Human being or People. They don’t call themselves Comanche. That term may have come from the Ute language. It means foreigner. The Comanche language is known, among the Numinu, as Numu tekwapu. Their language is part of the Uto-Aztecan group of languages. So it’s related to the Nahuatl language of the ancient Aztec Empire centered in Mexico City, at the time of Cortez and the Spanish conquistadores. And it’s so closely related to Shoshone that it’s sometimes described as a dialect, not a language.
