What language do I need to learn to become an Egyptologist?
From looking at the requirements for Ancient Near Eastern Studies undergrad degrees (which have Egyptology under them), they want you to have French or German up to at least level 3. Other possible entry points for grad study in Egyptology include Classics or Ancient History. Most grad programs require that you had French or German at least up through level 3, preferably higher. Most grad schools want you to study, either with them or prior to entry, the ancient and middle Egyptian language. And grad programs also seem to want you to study, either before entering or as part of your grad studies, another ancient language. Most students seem to choose ancient Greek or another Near Eastern language, depending on what, specifically, they plan to research. Some students do study modern Arabic. But the language you pick depends on your research interests. If you can learn both French and German, that’ll help you – you’ll be able to read more original research. But only one of those languages
