There are three ways to get licensed to counsel. They are Licensed Counseling Social Worker (LCSW), Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), and Clinical Psychologist. The first two require a masters degree, 3000 hours of intern therapy, and passage of a state test. A Clinical Psychologist must have a PhD in psychology or a PsyD degree which emphasizes counseling over research, at an accredited school, either American Psychological Association (APA) approved or approved by the state the test will be taken in. 1500 intern hours are to be completed before getting doctorate and 1500 hours required post doc before taking a state test for certification. A Clinical Psychologist can use any technique that has been validated through research and he can show he has acquired the skills to use this theraputic intervention.
