What kinds of sanctions are imposed for a first-time violation of the Code of Academic Conduct?
It depends on the nature of the violation and the student’s actions after the offense. In general, if the student admits the violation and accepts the consequences of her or his actions, the most likely sanction is disciplinary Probation through Graduation and/or Deferred Separation, combined with community service, special assignment, and/or an educational task. (link to Sanctioning factors & guidelines) – unless there are any “aggravating factors” that make the violation more serious and result harsher punishment. For example, Suspension or even Dismissal may be imposed for a first offense if the violation involves pre-planning, conspiring with others, deliberate harm to another, or a criminal act; if the student is reported for more than one violation at the same time; or if the student lies about the incident or provides false information to try to cover up the offense (see below).
