What kinds of protection do underwater divers need?

That depends on the water temperature. Also, do you mean freediving or scuba diving? If you’re freediving in the Caribbean, just a bathing suit and the usual stuff (fins, snorkel, etc). If you’re scuba diving, you should use a 2 or 3 mil shortie wetsuit and booties and then all the usual stuff. You probably wouldn’t need a knife there, but if you were diving in a wreck where there could be tangled fishing line, one might come in handy. If you were diving in a freshwater quarry near your house, you would more likely use a hood, gloves, booties, and a 7 mil wetsuit. Any winter diving or diving under ice would require a drysuit. There aren’t any cold water places that I can think of that would require a knife besides Catalina Island and other kelp diving areas–you could get tangled in the kelp.
