What kinds of opportunities are there for nurses today?
A. The opportunities for nurses are huge in all kinds of areas. When I’m talking to new students here at my own school, one thing I tell them is that the opportunities are tremendous. I encourage them to examine what it is they like to do. No matter what their interest, there is probably an opportunity to do that. Do they like children? There are always opportunities in pediatrics. Do they like working with older people? With the aging of the population, the need for geriatric care is growing. If they are more interested in health systems and how they can be constructed to provide the best care, I encourage them to consider administration. Nursing is a career that combines a strong basis in the sciences and liberal arts with the advanced technology of health care systems and the opportunity to make an impact on people’s lives. I’ve been a nurse for more than 30 years and I would make the same career choice if I was making the choice today.
