What kinds of minerals do mining companies want to mine on Fraser Island?
I hadn’t heard that sand mining on Fraser Island had reared its ugly head again! The minerals extracted from Fraser’s sands are mainly rutile, ilmenite, zircon and monazite. Ilmenite and rutile are major sources of titanium oxide. Many people are not aware that very large tracts of the island have already been mined in the past, particularly towards the southern end which is still a wasteland.
