What kinds of leave does FMLA cover?
FMLA covers the following three types of leave. Employees are eligible for a total of 12 weeks of FMLA leave per 12-month period (defined by your employer’s policy as a rolling 12-month period), regardless of the type of leave, including the 12 weeks for a qualifying urgent need when a family member is called to active duty. (Employees are not eligible for 12 weeks of each type of leave.) However, eligible employees may have up to 26 weeks (total) of FMLA leave per 12 month period (defined by your employer’s policy as a rolling 12-month period), to care for a family member who is injured or becomes ill as the result of military service. • Medical leave is taken for the employee’s own serious health condition (occupational or nonoccupational disability). The definition of serious health condition is provided in a later section of these guidelines. • Family medical leave is taken when (1) an employee is needed to provide care for an eligible family member (spouse, parent, son, or daughte
