What kinds of job responsibilities should students have during internships?
To fulfill the requirements of the Internship in Technical Communication, students should be primarily involved with some type of workplace-based communication. This can include—but is not limited to—web design, proposal and report preparation, document creation and editing, marketing, and communication. While some clerical work and office support is a part of any entry-level position, this type of work should not constitute more than a quarter of students’ internship responsibilities. If at all possible, work supervisors should give students the opportunity to develop portfolio-ready material. Students and work supervisors who have questions about whether the specific job duties meet the requirements for the Internship in Technical Communication should speak with the minor coordinator.
