What kinds of evaluations have been done on the PCAN curriculum?
We have used two approaches to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. First we developed the Child Abuse and Neglect Self Assessment Scale (CANSES). This is a self-efficacy scale developed with faculty from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. It is given to the trainers as a pre- and post-test. Analysis of results show a statistically significant difference in trainers’ self-efficacy beliefs related to their capacity to teach child care providers how they can help reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. This outcome indicates that participating in the 3-day training of trainers, implementing the curriculum and participating in distance learning activities is effective in increasing trainers’ confidence that they can effectively teach the PCAN content to child care providers.
