What kinds of Design Principles are in the MLK Street Plan?
PARKING Appropriate amount and location of various options support adjacent commercial areas; minimize neighborhood impact; enhance commercial and housing development. GATEWAY Enhance distinctive identity of various segments of NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Include street plantings, trees, and poles. Architectural treatments should be noticeable from cars. COMMERICAL NODES Serve neighborhoods within easy walk of housing – no farther than ¾ of a mile apart, provide adequate safe turning lanes, and include exiting light industry. DISTINCT SEGMENTS Boulevard does not look the same throughout; acknowledge existing nodes and segments; include community services; reinforce existing zones. AESTHETICALLY PLEASING AND PEDSTIRAN-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT Include: trees; wide sidewalks; paving; focus on commercial and residential development areas; appropriate design for specific areas to accommodate cars, pedestrians, and residents; and, safe pedestrian crossings.
