A good, stable material that a lot of cabinet makers and trim carpenters use for paint-grade work is called MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard. Most home centers (big box) stock it and they can even cut it for you. It can be purchased as 3/4″ thick and in 4′ x 8′ sheets and 12″, 16″ & 24″ widths by whatever length you need UP TO 16′. It takes paint very well and is extremely smooth. You will need to prime it though and apply two coats of finish color.
