What kind of wireless card do i need?
Well most modern laptops have wireless networking built into them. If the laptop does not have wireless networking built in you can get a little Wireless G card that will go into the side slot of your computer, or there are even wireless USB devices that you can just plug into a USB port on your notebook. You need a wireless device for your NOTEBOOK computer so it will link to your router!! The modem has nothing to do with this. Ps, If you buy a DLINK wireless G card, it should work with your router. You don’t need to find an actiontec wireless card!! Dlinks are good. I bought a cheaper one once that wasn’t compatible, but Dlink or Lnyksys names are good guality. However, like I said, most new notebooks come with wireless networking built in.
You need an 11Mbps 802.11b wireless network card for your laptop. Burlingame Library uses the Netgear WG511 Wireless PC Card. For PCs, other users within the system have had success with the Orinoco Silver (made by Lucent), the Cisco Aironet and Linksys brands. We have no information thus far on the performance of SMC, D-Link or US Robotics brands. For Apple notebooks, the Airport card is recommended. Most cards are available for about $70 (or less) at local computer stores, or one of many online computer outlets.
Requirements for Wireless Access To connect to the wireless network, you’ll need: • A Campus-Wide Login (CWL) account • A laptop, PDA, or desktop that has a wireless network card which supports the 802.11g, 802.11a or 802.11b standards. Campus-Wide Login accounts are free for UBC students, faculty, staff, and affiliated guests (sponsored). Current students, staff and faculty can subscribe for a CWL account by visiting the CWL self-subscribe webpage to sign up. If you are a visitor to the UBC campus but not affiliated with UBC, you can access our wireless network by using the FatPort wireless service. More information on the FatPort network can be found on the UBC Wireless website.
