What I’m assuming is you’re meaning coal miners.Under ground were many dangers.Cave in,black damp, flooding, explosion and quite a few others. The alarm under ground was an alarm clock type of warning.Would ring for 30sec stop for 10sec then repeat. As the miners worked in confined ereas this intermittent ringing was to prevent the miners becoming disoriented. At the same time above ground the mine would set off a siren. This was to warn the surrounding citizens of an emergency at the mine. Also to alert off duty miners to get to the mine and help in any rescue.Britain was at war during this time and the mine siren was at a lower pitch than the air-raid siren.
