What kind of voluntary work is available?
Find the limits of your imagination and thats pretty well where the limits of voluntary work lie. Most large companies have work-experience programmes where you can get an unpaid taste of working life in the kind of career youre aiming for, although these are often as heavily oversubscribed as the jobs themselves. More broadly, volunteer work can get you involved in: homeless shelters, working with the elderly, working with children, staffing helplines, working for the environment, mental health, working with animals, residential schools, disabled people, pet rescue, community projects, setting up recycling programmes, working with excluded young people, teaching English to refugees or helping out at a local charity shop.
