What kind of training does a surgical technologist need?
Surgical technologists usually complete formal training programs that lead to a diploma, certificate, or associate degree. The programs consist of classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience. Coursework usually includes anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, medical terminology, and professional ethics. Surgical technologists must keep up date with the latest advancements in the field. Most employers prefer surgical technologists to be certified. Voluntary professional Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification can be earned from the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist. The requirements include graduating from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and passing a national certification exam. Certified Surgical Technologists must complete continuing education and pass a reexamination every 4 years to maintain the certification.
