Usually IVF is either the last step when TTC or the only option available due to issues such as extreme low sperm count and/or blocked / scarred / damaged fallopian tubes. When you see an RE / fertility clinic, they usually meet with you to review your medical history, family history, cycle history as well as medical and family history of your partner. They will do testing if you have not done so – common tests include blood work to check to see if you are ovulating, blood tests to check hormone levels and blood tests to check FSH which is an indicator of ovarian reserve and quality. These tests are done on certain cycle days. They may do an HSG which is basically an x-ray of the fallopian tubes after the inject dye through a catheter to see if there is any blockage, ultrasound of the uterus / ovaries to check for any cysts, abnormalities etc . . . and a semen analysis for your partner.
