It all depends on which state you live in, but most states will require testing batteries that measure phonological processing and auditory processing. A cognitive (intelligence) battery will also need to conducted to determine that the student has an otherwise average intellectual profile. Auditory processing is a component of intelligence and in order to qualify a student must have a weakness in this area along with academic difficulties in phonological processing including phonemic awareness, reading fluency, and spelling. These must be linked. A weakness in reading comprehension may be deemed a secondary characteristic of dyslexia. Also remember that dyslexia is a specific learning disability in reading. Some tests that I use in my practice are the Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Cognitive Abilities and Tests of Achievement and the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing. Hope this helps!
