What kind of students attend the UNM Music Department?
Many different kinds of students are attracted to the UNM Music program because a strong diversity of programs is offered. The Department firmly believes that a basic foundation core in musical performance and fundamental skills is the heart of every music program. From there, students can become educators, performers, researchers, work in medical arts programs, compose music, or work in the recording music industry, or they can design their own music programs as they add to the required solid educational background provided by the Department of Music. We offer traditional core courses, but these are supplemented by such programs as Mariachi, Flamenco Guitar, Contemporary World Music, Recording Studio Techniques, Arts-in-Medicine, Computer Applications in Music, and String Pedagogy. Many of these courses and programs are unique to the University of New Mexico. New Mexico is the home of a rich cultural and artistic heritage that reflects the tri-cultural history of our state.
