What kind of side effects come with the second-generation drugs?
Dr. Gaynes: The second generation drugs have some similar side effects as the first generation antidepressants. The more common ones are nausea and vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, and for some, difficulties with sleep. On average, just over sixty percent of patients taking a second generation antidepressant experienced at least one type of side effect. Now for some people, that side effect a particular side effect say diarrhea might not be that bothersome. For others, having that kind of side effect, might make it intolerable, and might be a reason that they would want to change. So while the side effects can be similar between the antidepressants, it often ends up being more a matter of the individual’s decision about whether that side effect was intolerable or not. And I think, probably, the other important thing to point out is that still most people did not need to stop an antidepressant because of side effects that they felt were intolerable. Rand: Is there
