Shakespeare most definitely did not attend Eton. He probably attended the grammar school in Stratford-on-Avon, perhaps from the age of 6 or 7. At that time it was highly unusual for a child of anything other than well-off parents to attend any type of school. Although not rich (and often in debt) Shakespeare’s father neverthless had some official standing in the town (he was an alderman of the borough, which entitled his children to free education at the grammar school).
